We are delighted to announce that our PI, Dr. Dongkwan Shin, was appointed in 2026 as an Editorial Board Member of BMC Biology, serving in the journal's Cancer Biology section.
BMC Biology is the flagship biology title of the BMC series (Springer Nature), a selective open-access journal publishing research across all areas of biology. The journal holds a Journal Impact Factor of 5.4 (2025) and a 5-year Impact Factor of 5.7, and is classified as JCR Q1.
In this role, Dr. Shin will help evaluate and guide peer review for manuscripts in cancer biology, drawing on his expertise in bioinformatics, patient-derived organoid models, and AI-based prediction of drug response. Serving on the editorial board of an international journal is a meaningful recognition of his contributions to the field, and we are proud to see his research leadership acknowledged by the wider scientific community.
Congratulations, Dr. Shin — well deserved!
Dr. Shin's listing can be found on the BMC Biology editorial board page: https://bmcbiol.biomedcentral.com/about/editorial-board
We are proud to share that our PI, Dr. Shin, has received the 25th Anniversary National Cancer Center President's Award.
This award stands as a testament to Dr. Shin’s enduring dedication to excellence in research and leadership. It is a deeply meaningful milestone that inspires our entire team as we continue to push the boundaries of science and innovation. Please join us in celebrating this wonderful honor and wishing Dr. Shin continued success!
We are excited to announce that our PI, Dr. Shin, together with co-investigator Dr. Kim Yun-hee, both of the National Cancer Center, has launched a new research project to develop a "Biological World Model" (BWM) — an AI framework designed to predict how candidate drugs will behave across different experimental systems, including cell lines, organoids, and animal models.
One of the greatest challenges in drug development is the "scale gap": compounds that perform well in cell-based experiments often fail to show the same effect in living systems, because complex biological features such as the tumor microenvironment, immune responses, and cell-to-cell interactions are not fully reproduced in the lab. As a result, enormous time and cost are invested, yet only a small fraction of candidates ultimately reach approval.
To bridge this gap, the team will treat cell lines, organoids, and animal models as distinct "biological worlds" and develop AI that can extend drug-response information learned in one system to another. Going beyond simply predicting whether a drug works, the model will leverage generative AI to forecast the intracellular changes a drug induces — including patterns of gene activation and suppression — effectively serving as a "virtual clinical trial" for drug candidates. The team also anticipates applications in precision medicine, where predicting patient-specific drug responses could support personalized treatment strategies for cancer patients.
This research is supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT's new "AI + Science & Technology (S&T) Innovation Technology Development" program (2026–2029, total funding of KRW 22.5 billion). Among six projects selected across major national strategic fields, the National Cancer Center's study was chosen as the representative project in the bio field, with KRW 3 billion in dedicated research funding.
We are proud to see Dr. Shin and Dr. Kim take on such a forward-looking challenge, and we look forward to sharing the team's progress as the project develops. Congratulations to Dr. Shin, Dr. Kim, and all collaborators on this exciting milestone!

Congratulations to our PI, Dr. Shin, and postdoctoral researcher Dr. Jonghyun Lee on being featured in the National Cancer Center Webzine (Fall 2025, Issue 3)!
The article highlights a collaborative study between the National Cancer Center and Seoul National University, which developed a novel morphology-based classification system for oral cancer using patient-derived organoids. This innovative approach enables prognosis prediction and personalized treatment strategies for oral cancer patients.
Dr. Lee contributed as a co-first author on this research, which was published in Cell Reports Medicine (IF 11.6) in May 2025. The study is recognized as the first in the world to quantitatively predict oral cancer prognosis and drug response by integrating organoid-based morphological classification with whole-genome/exome analysis.
We're proud to see our lab members' outstanding work featured in the National Cancer Center's official publication. Congratulations to Dr. Shin and Dr. Lee on this well-deserved recognition!
Congratulations to our PI, Dr. Shin, on being featured in the National Cancer Center Webzine (Fall 2025, Issue 3)!
The article highlights Dr. Shin's collaborative research with KAIST, which developed 'REVERT' — a systems biology-based platform that identifies molecular "reverse switches" capable of reverting cancer cells back to a near-normal state. This innovative approach opens new possibilities for cancer cell reprogramming therapies.
The study, published in Advanced Science (IF 14.1) in January 2025, demonstrates the potential of this technology using patient-derived colon cancer cell models.
We're proud to see Dr. Shin's pioneering work featured in the National Cancer Center's official publication. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!
